Updated Mitigation Strategies (Enhanced Safety Protocols)
Help Sheet for Families

August 13, 2021: When we are notified of a positive COVID-19 case by a parent/guardian or the Department of Public Health, our goal is to inform you that your child was in class, on a bus, or in an extracurricular school-related group with a student or staff member with a positive case. Unlike last year, when we sent notifications to only individuals deemed to be in close contact, we are sending notices to the entire class, bus, and extracurricular groups this year. Since we are not quarantining healthy students, this process gives parents an option to make the best decisions for their families. The Department of Public Health will notify the parent/guardian of any child required to quarantine. We are monitoring the data closely and will make adjustments to our procedures as needed

August 3, 2021: The Dawson County School System welcomes you back to the 2021-2022 school year. The district will begin the year with normal operations.  But, as always, local data and state mandates will drive future decisions concerning mitigation strategies, potential contact tracing, and potential quarantines. The district will make adjustments to procedures if necessary and communicate those changes as they occur. The district will continue to use local data to inform decision making.

As of today, masks will be optional for all students and staff in all DCS facilities. Masks will be made available at each location. DCS will continue to report positive cases to the Department of Public Health to assist with contract tracing efforts.

If a student tests positive for COVID, parents/guardians must contact their school nurse.  If someone tests positive for COVID in a classroom or school related activity, parents/guardians will receive a message from the school via telephone or email.  Dawson County Schools will not issue precautionary quarantines for healthy students. Click here for DPH guidance for if you were exposed to someone with COVID.

Our community does continue to deal with COVID-19 but the number of cases in Dawson County remain low. COVID vaccinations are not required for employees or students, but remain available and accessible for those that choose to participate. All of our stakeholders are encouraged to take appropriate mitigation strategies including social distancing when possible and washing hands on a regular basis. Click here for tips from the CDC on helpful ways to stop the spread of germs. The district will continue to keep our schools and buses clean, well maintained, and appropriately stocked with cleaning supplies.
