Dawson County 2015 REACH Scholars            2015 REACH Scholars

On September 23, 2015, five Dawson County eighth grade students participated in the official Signing Day Ceremony of the Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen (REACH) Georgia program.  REACH is a needs-based scholarship designed to promote academic success and expand access to higher education.

The program requires students to sign contracts to maintain a certain grade point average, good behavior & attendance, and remain crime & drug free.  The scholars also commit to meet with a volunteer mentor and academic coach until they graduate from high school. Their parents or guardians also signed contracts to support their student through their education. When these scholars graduate from high school, they will receive up to a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500 each year for up to four years) to be used at a HOPE eligible Georgia two or four-year college. Many colleges are matching this scholarship and some are double matching the scholarship, providing scholars additional resources for their college education.

"Dawson County is only one of 41 school systems out of 180 that are participating in the Georgia REACH program," said Dawson County School Superintendent Damon Gibbs. "We're excited for our inaugural class."

REACH Georgia is a key component of the governor’s Complete College Georgia initiative, which calls for and identifies strategies for the state’s public and private colleges to add an additional 250,000 college graduates by 2020 and ensure these students graduate with relevant postsecondary degrees in a timely manner.

Dawson County Schools is fortunate to partner with the Next Generation Clubhouse.  Next Generation is a positive youth development center that places emphasis on in-school and after-school mentoring (both 1:1 and group), STEaM activities, tutorial support, life skills, job skills, prevention, field trips, community service, and parent engagement.  For more information about Next Generation, click HERE.
